Q:  Can I tan while pregnant?

A:       Yes.  Tanning while pregnant is safe to do.  As your belly grows you need to be concerned about not getting over-heated.  You also need to be careful getting in and out of the tanning bed, as your center of gravity has changed.

Q:  Do tanning lotions really work?

A:      Yes.  Dry skin will not absorb UV, it actually reflects dry skin.  Tanning lotions are designed to work with your skin to actually help it tan.  If you don’t use lotion it takes 5-7 minutes for your dry skin to actually start absorbing UV.  If you are using a 20-minute bed you are wasting ¼ of your session waiting for your skin to start absorbing UV.  Think about it.

Q:  Do I have to use eye protection?

A:  Yes.  Protecting your eyes is the most important thing you can do when you tan.  Looking into tanning bulbs is just like looking at a welding torch.  You can burn your eyes from tanning if you don’t wear goggles.

Q:  Can I just cover my eyes with a towel?

A:      No.  The only thing that blocks 100% UV is goggles.  Towels, cotton balls, coins, body stickers etc. do not block UV.  All of these things let light come through.  You’ve only got two eyes protect them every time.

Q:  Is indoor tanning the same as outdoor?

A:   When you tan at an indoor tanning salon, your skin produces a tan the same way it does when you lay in the sun; through ultraviolet (UV) light.  There is one important difference, though.  When you are outdoors in the sun, you cannot control the amount of UV light you are exposed to, because it is affected by changes in the atmosphere.  Indoor tanning is one way to regulate the amount of UV light you are exposed to, because it is a controlled environment.
